Electron Cloud Effects in Accelerators∗

چکیده

We present a brief summary of various aspects of the electron-cloud effect (ECE) in accelerators. For further details, the reader is encouraged to refer to the proceedings of many prior workshops, either dedicated to EC or with significant EC contents, including the entire “ECLOUD” series [1–22]. In addition, the proceedings of the various flavors of Particle Accelerator Conferences [23] contain a large number of EC-related publications. The ICFA Beam Dynamics Newsletter series [24] contains one dedicated issue, and several occasional articles, on EC. An extensive reference database is the LHC website on EC [25].

Properties of the electron cloud in a high-energy positron and electron storage ring

034402-1 Low-energy, background electrons are ubiquitous in high-energy particle accelerators. Under certain conditions, interactions between this electron cloud and the high-energy beam can give rise to numerous effects that can seriously degrade the accelerator performance. These effects range from vacuum degradation to collective beam instabilities and emittance blowup. Although electron-clo...

Electron Cloud Effects at Positron/Electron (e+/e-) Machines and Electron Cloud Diagnostics

Background electrons are ubiquitous in high-intensity particle accelerators. Under certain operating conditions, amplification of the electron cloud can occur. The beam-cloud interaction can seriously degrade the accelerator performance with effects that range from vacuum degradation to collective beam instabilities. Although electron cloud effects (ECEs) were first observed 20 years ago in a p...

Electron Cloud Effects – Observations, Mitigation Measures, and Challenges in Rhic and Sns

Electron cloud is one of the leading mechanisms that limit the performance of high intensity circular accelerators and colliders. In the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, multibunch electron cloud effects are observed both in the warm region and super-conducting region when the number of ion bunches and their intensities are raised beyond the design values. Vacuum-pressure rises, transverse tune...

Solenoid Effects on an Electron Cloud

Electron cloud due to beam-induced multipacting can generate transverse instabilities and beam size blow-up in both positron and proton accelerators. A solenoid satisfactorily suppresses multipacting in the drift region by confining the electrons close to the walls’ surface. There is a long drift region in the KEKB LER, wherein a solenoid occupies most of the beam’s pipe. We investigated the so...

Diagnostics for Electron Cloud Measurements in CESR

Clouds of low energy electrons frequently build up within the beam chambers of particle accelerators. In many cases, electron cloud effects (ECEs) cause beam instabilities and degradation of performance. This is of particular concern for high intensity positron rings, in which ECEs can lead to emittance blow-up. Understanding and mitigating electron cloud build up is thus of particular importan...

Beam-Induced Multipactoring and Electron-Cloud Effects in Particle Accelerators

High-energy particle accelerators produce intense charged particle beams, e.g. of electrons or protons, at multi-GeV or multi-TeV energies, either shooting a single such beam against a fixed target or colliding two beams, in order to produce new particles and to study the scattering events in the search for the fundamental laws of physics. In the beam pipe of these accelerators an “electron clo...
